As our countries continue to learn about the far-reaching consequences of the coronavirus, the solidarity of a caring community gives us hope. On behalf of the members of Sister Cities of Hampton, Virginia, we send our thoughts and best wishes to our Vendôme family!
Vendôme Hero Honored!
Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, Comte de Rochambeau was born in Vendôme, France—sister city of Hampton Virginia. On October 18, 2021, he was one of four Yorktown heroes honored for the significant contributions to the decisive France-American victory of 1781 that led to American independence. Hampton Sister Cities Vendome, France Chair Tanika Gonzales attended the event. Members Kearston and Kendall Gonzales performed the United States National Anthem and the French Anthem (La Marseillaise).
Vendôme is a town of just under 20,000 residents on the Loire River in the picturesque Loir Valley about 130 miles southwest of Paris. The Count de Rochambeau who led 6,000 French troops in the American Revolution, here on the Peninsula, was born in Vendôme. In the late 1980s, Hampton and Vendôme had an active student exchange program.
An Invitation from Chairperson Tanika Gonzales
What exciting times I've had planning activities, hosting visitors, discussing business opportunities and traveling to our sister cities. All of these activities require a huge effort from several dedicated volunteers. And that's why we need YOU!
If you have an interest in the culture, history or people of France, please join Sister Cities of Hampton and volunteer to serve on the Vendôme Coordinating Committee. I am proof that it will be a very rewarding experience for you and your family.
