A Lasting Partnership Begins!
|
On Friday, August 23, 2024, The Tucker 1624 Society commemorated the 405-year link between Malanje, Angola and Hampton, Virginia. This event precedes the official “twinning” of our two communities which will be held in September of this year. The Minister of Culture of the Republic of Angola, Filipe Silvino de Pina Zau, the Angola Ambassador to the United States, Agostino Van-Dunem and a large delegation of Angolans attended this notable occasion.
To kick-off the Hampton-Malanje partnership, a delegation composed of City of Hampton and Sister City officials visited Malanje in July. They were warmly welcomed by the Governor of Malanje, Marcos Alexandre Nhunga, the Governor of Luanda, and a number of officials and citizens. A visit to Calandula Falls, Massangano, the Kwanza River, the Saint Isabel Orphanage, and the new Luanda airport [pictured above] provided the delegation with a rich overview of the people, culture, and the many opportunities available. Our Historic BondForever signifies longevity, power, and our binding culture which is here to stay. Malanje and Hampton's bond traces back to August of 1619, when two of the first documented Africans, Antoney and Isabella, arrived at Point Comfort (present-day Fort Monroe). Their son, William, was the first child of African ancestry known to have been born in Virginia, and descendants of William Tucker continue to reside in the Hampton Roads area. This historic beginning and its waterfront commerce naturally led to choosing Malanje Province as Hampton's fifth Sister City. |
